SWIFT is the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, a network through which financial institutions exchange standardized messages. Its formats and bank identifier codes support cross-border payment instructions, correspondent banking, securities and treasury communication, but the network normally carries information rather than holding or settling the funds itself. SWIFT is not a bank, retail transfer provider or the Swift programming language.
